The Environment Bank can contribute to national targets for increasing the area of semi-natural habitats
Government is recommending we need to increase the amount of semi-natural habitats in the UK to improve biodiversity, enable adaptation to climate change and provide landscapes people want to visit and enjoy. The following targets have been identified :
- Native woodland – create an additional 135,000ha by 2015; 26,000 ha to be native pinewoods
- Lowland heathland – create an additional 15,250ha by 2030 (doubling the current extent of heathland)
- Lowland calcareous grassland – create an additional 8,500ha by 2020
- Reedbeds – create an additional 3,000ha by 2020
- Fens – create an additional 2,000ha by 2020
- Intertidal habitat – create an additional 3,600ha by 2015 (to offset losses due to sea level rise
- Cereal field margins – create an additional 18,000ha by 2015
