Long-term benefits

Restore habitats and secure a reliable income for 30 years. Lease or sell a parcel of land to Environment Bank and together we build land and business resilience for years to come.

Creating a Habitat Bank

New nature markets, such as BNG, are creating opportunities for landowners. As market leaders in BNG and nature-based solutions, we work with landowners and farmers nationwide to build a network of Habitat Banks.

To have the biggest impact on nature, we create Habitat Banks where biodiversity is low, often on land that is difficult to farm or has a history of intensive farming. We purchase or lease that land for at least thirty years, so our ecologists can work alongside the landowner to manage the new habitats until they are fully established.

Each Habitat Bank is tailored to its local landscape, introducing a variety of habitats including meadows, woodland, wetland and scrubland.

Cost, liability and demand

We cover the upfront cost of creating the Habitat Bank and take on the long-term liability for maintaining it across its lifetime. The complexity of setting one up and keeping it compliant sits with us, not the landowner.

Alongside lease payments, we pay landowners to help manage the habitats through sustainable farming activities such as livestock grazing and hay cutting, so the land’s primary use can remain agricultural. We secure funding for all thirty years of management payments in advance.

Options to suit your business

We can buy your land outright, bringing capital into your business, or you can lease it to us, or a combination of both, keeping it in your name and securing tax-efficient income for over 30 years.

Tailored approach

You retain ownership of your land, we tailor your Habitat Bank to match your existing land income, and you keep any additional benefits from your business.

Long-term security

We fund each Habitat Bank in advance for 30+ years to cover all costs and give landowners confidence in their tax-efficient lease and management payments.

Expert support

A dedicated ecologist and land manager will be there from the start as we help nature recover across your landscape – and we take full responsibility for BNG delivery.

Revenue share

When we hit the revenue target for your Habitat Bank, any additional revenue is shared 50/50 with you – ensuring you benefit fairly from the income generated by your land.
