What we’ve gained

Our biodiversity experts have established the nation’s largest and fastest growing network of BNG Habitat Banks. At these Habitat Banks, we work with local landowners and farmers to build thriving spaces for nature, turning low-biodiversity land into valuable habitats.

Through our Habitat Banks, we’ve already created thousands of Biodiversity Units which provide an effective off-site Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) solution for developers. Our Biodiversity Units have helped unlock development projects for household names like Everton FC, Aldi, and National Grid.

Our early roots

In 2006, Environment Bank began by shaping nature policy in England, working with Natural England and the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra). This led to the successful launch of Biodiversity Net Gain, one of the most transformative pieces of nature legislation in history.

With an ambitious vision for nature recovery, we received backing from the British Sustainable Infrastructure Fund (BSIF) at Gresham House in 2021. This investment allowed us to put our plan into action and launch large-scale, high-impact Habitat Banks to restore land across England.

How we’re growing

As biodiversity experts leading the way in BNG, we’re now working alongside organisations like the UK Business and Biodiversity Forum (UKBBF), the Science-Based Targets Network (SBTN), and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD).

While we grow our network of BNG Habitat Banks in England, we also continue to innovate and pioneer new nature-based solutions that enable businesses to meet their environmental goals. This includes our transformative biodiversity solution – Nature Shares.
